Dental Crowns vs. Fillings

Dental Crowns Dentists Grandville MI

Our dentists in Grandville, MI, may recommend either dental crowns or fillings depending on the extent of tooth decay. If you have a large cavity, a dental crown will restore the full function and appearance of a weakened tooth. For small cavities, dental fillings are often the preferred choice. That way, we’re able to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible.

If you’re unsure of whether you need dental crowns or fillings, you’ve come to the right place! Our Grandville dentists would be more than happy to help you explore your treatment options during your next appointment at 44 West Dental Professionals.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know about each procedure.

Dental Crowns

In general, porcelain dental crowns are used to restore teeth with significant damage or decay. They can also be used to restore teeth that have received root canal therapy or cover dental implants.

A dental crown is essentially a cap that covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line. It keeps the remaining tooth structure safe and intact while providing a strong biting surface. That way, you can continue eating your favorite foods as you did before.

The dental crown procedure takes two visits to our office. During your first appointment, we’ll need to prepare your tooth so it’s ready to receive the crown. This involves filing down and shaping the enamel to create enough space for the crown to fit over the tooth.

Next, we’ll take impressions of your teeth to send to the lab responsible for fabricating your dental crown. While you wait for your new dental crown, we’ll place a temporary crown over your tooth to protect it in the meantime.

When you return for your second appointment, we’ll replace the temporary crown with the permanent one.

Composite Fillings

Our dentists in Grandville, MI, may recommend a composite filling to restore a tooth with a small cavity. Unlike silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings match the color of your natural enamel. This means that you won’t be able to tell where your tooth ends and your filling starts.

It takes one appointment to get a dental filling. This is because a filling is a “direct restoration.” As the name suggests, this means that one of our dentists will apply the filling material directly to your tooth. They’ll fill the hole left behind after removing the decayed tooth structure, restoring the tooth’s full strength and natural appearance. No outside dental lab required!

The smaller a filling, the longer it tends to last. It’s also important that you maintain good oral hygiene. Dental restorations, such as fillings, will typically last longer if the rest of the mouth is healthy. Under ideal conditions, composite fillings can last for several years and serve you well as you go about your daily life.
