What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Are you tired of wearing dentures that slip? If so, it’s time to schedule a consultation with one of our dental implant dentists in Grandville, MI. They’d be more than happy to help you explore your tooth replacement options, including implant-supported dentures. Unlike conventional full dentures, implant-supported dentures are anchored in the jawbone to give you the ultimate stability while you chew, smile, and laugh.
Here’s what else you need to know about implant-supported dentures.
What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth root that’s made out of a titanium alloy. This titanium screw is biocompatible with your jawbone tissue, which means it’ll act as a stable foundation for an abutment and crown. Together, the implant, abutment, and crown provide you with the full function and appearance of a natural tooth.
At 44 West Dental Professionals, we offer several different types of dental implants. These include single-tooth implants, all-on-4® implants, and implant-supported fixed dentures.
Why Should I Choose Implant-Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures replace an entire arch of teeth, which is perfect for patients who have experienced significant tooth loss. If you’re getting frustrated with slipping dentures, implant-supported fixed dentures will give you the stability and confidence you crave.
In general, implant-supported fixed dentures are held in place by four or six dental implants. One of our dentists will insert these implants into the jawbone and leave them to heal over the course of several months during a process called osseointegration.
During this time, you won’t be without teeth because they’ll place a temporary denture on top of the implants. Once the implants are properly fused to the bone, the permanent denture appliance will be placed over top.
Since conventional dentures sit on top of your gums, they don’t prevent bone loss in the jaw. This means that patients who wear full dentures are at an increased risk of jawbone deterioration and eventual facial collapse. This can give the patient a sunken appearance and make it difficult or uncomfortable for them to continue wearing dentures.
The good news is that implant-supported dentures exert constant and even pressure on the jaw. That way, the body knows that the bone tissue is still in use and won’t absorb the minerals to use elsewhere.
